Man has always had dreams about flying like a bird. Planes are good but noisy. Gliders are better and if you haven't tried it I invite you to discover it high above the mountains. It is fantastic but in a glider you are in a cockpit and don't feel the wind.
What else is there? The hang-glider and paragliding.
You don't launch out alone into the void! There is a run on a gentle slope, to inflate the sail. You are in front of the pilot under the same the sail but just check he is there before departure, just in case.
The ground moves away gently, the general impression is of calm and silence. You fly like an eagle and they and vultures will often follow you, undoubtedly taking you for a big brother for whom they have the greatest respect.
Before trying this incredible experience yourself, you can watch others taking off and landing. Bagnères-de-Luchon is a famous centre for paragliding. You can take the telecabin from the centre of town to Superbagnères, altitude 1800m. The take off point at Superbagnères is quite near the station.
The landings are impressive because of the precision of the highly qualified pilots. The landing field is very close to the centre of town, about 10 minutes on foot and it is used only for this purpose. Come and see them landing. Some put their feet on the ground as if they had just taken a single step. It's spectacular.
